The iPhone Saga
Saturday, June 30, 2007
Well, I got my iPhone.
I knew there would be a line at the store in Mt. Juliet for the phone. My original intentions we're to start scoping out the lines between 12 and 2 and just kind of play it by ear. I got up around 8:30 Friday morning and started looking at some online forums on Apple's official site. There we're some posts from Nashville that said there we're already 50 people in line at Green Hills mall. I immediately thought this can't be good. So I broke down and left home at around 9:00 am, headed for Mt. Juliet. Surprisingly, when I got to Providence Place in Mt. Juliet, there was only one guy in line. He had been there since 7:45. I decided that it obviously wasn't bad and I would come back. I ended up leaving for about an hour. I drove around, went to look at my old house in MJ, went to see Lesley at Target, and then went to Books a Million. Around 10, I drove back around to the AT&T store and saw a second person with his young son get in line. I knew it was then time for me to start my wait. Luckily(maybe not so luckily. i'll explain), they had an awning over the stores entrance so it was comfortable to be outside. I brought a chair, a cooler full of ice and water, a carry bag with some books, magazines, and ipod. I was set for my 8 hour wait.
The day actually went by kind of fast. It felt a lot faster than say the Wii lines or day after Thanksgiving lines. The people in line we're really nice as we're the AT&T store employees. They we're super cool. We all held each others places in line while we all occasionally stepped out to go do something. Around 11:30, Lesley came by on her lunch break and we had a nice small lunch in line. Around 2, I think, I noticed a car pull up and Scott and Todd Burka got out. They walked up and said they we're passing by and decided to say hey. They said they we're going to eat with their mom and I could come if I wanted. The other guys in line didn't care, so I went. I got back in line about 30 minutes later. I stayed in the line the rest of the time. I would say there we're about 10-15 people in line most of the day. The line didn't get long until about 4pm or so. At one point, it did rain for a little bit, but the awning was good cover. I wouldn't have even called it a shower really. As it turns out, we we're very lucky as the rain was REALLY bad everywhere but where we were. It stopped and we got all our stuff back out. It was actually really nice out during the entire day. It was very comfortable to wait. The sun only stayed out for about an hour and half and the rest of the day was overcast. That hour and half of sun though was enough to sunburn me pretty good, even though I was under the awning the entire day. I don't really understand how I got so burned. Around 4, a guy pulled up in an SUV and gave us all large fresh squeezed lemonades courtesy of Chik-Fil-A. Chik-Fil-A rules. If there was ever a model for how to run a fast food restaurant correctly, it would be Chik-Fil-A.
Anyways, the AT&T store closed around 4:30 in order for their employees to have some sort of break before the madness, put out iPhone stuff, and have some dinner. We kept asking them periodically throughout the day if they knew how many iPhones they had. I wasn't worried though because I knew they had at least 3. The AT&T guys maintained that they had no idea because they we're not allowed to open any iPhone boxes until 4:30. The only person who knew was the district manager type guy, who I can only describe as very politician like. I don't know really any other way to describe him. Due to my nature of work, I have encountered many a district manager in my time. When this guy got out of his car to come in, I told the guys in line that I knew he was a district guy. I could spot it a mile away. When we asked him how many phones they had, he would only say that they had "limited quantities". It would have been cool if he had told us, because we felt for the people waiting in line that would inevitably not get an iPhone. But it was obvious that he wanted that line for attention, so he wasn't about to be nice and tell anyone.
At 6:00, they unlocked the doors and the first 4 of us went in to get our phones. They we're all super nice. It did take them a while to sell some of us our phones because their computers and network we're acting up. I think the onslaught of people on the network on the east coast and now central zones was the obvious cause. As I stood there, I heard the district manager guy tell someone that they only had 15 8gig phones and 10 4gb phones. I kind of felt for the guy when he went outside to tell the people in line. I know what its like to confront an angry mob when your just doing your job the correct way. Something that was weird was that their Laurenceburg store 100 miles away, had no lines and they had almost 20 more phones than the Mt. Juliet store. Why would they expect a lot of iPhones to be sold so far out in the country? It was obvious that the District guy was kind of ticked, so he actually got someone to volunteer to drive 100 miles to go pick some phones up. I call that really wanting to get out of work. Anyways, I paid for my phone, took my SEALED SHUT(yes it was sealed shut) and headed home. I didn't have one of Mt. Juliet's finest walk me out to my car like a few people did. My car was right beside the front door. On my way home I called my friend David and he had gotten a phone to at the Cool Springs store. He got the last 4gb phone they had in the store. He decided to head over to my place for an "unwrapping ceremony". lol! When he finally got to my place, we sliced open the bag and found a black box of goodness known as the iPhone. Setup was sort of easy. It connected to iTunes and I went through the activation stuff. The problem I had and I'm actually currently still having is that AT&T obviously wasn't prepared for the onslaught of new phone activations and people switching their services like me. So right now as I type this, my iPhone isn't activated. Until your phone is activated by AT&T you can't do anything and use any features. Seriously. The only thing you can do is make an emergency call. That's it. David got his to work though. He got a brand new number instead of switching his Sprint number so his activated right away. I now feel that I should have done that too, but AT&T told me it's too late for me to go back and change it.
The iPhone itself is simply stunning. The tv ads and videos just don't do it justice. The screen is so beautiful to look at. It is so clear and unlike any cell phone screen I have ever seen. I love the Google maps feature. You can zoom right down to your house. YouTube looks great. The YouTube videos I saw we're good quality. They didn't look all compressed like the normal YouTube videos look. It might not be the case for all of them, but the ones we looked at we're noticeably better quality. There has been a lot of talk about how the keyboard might take a few days to get used to. I got used to it right away. It's smart and auto corrects your mistypes. The web is great on the iPhone, but it is basic html. It does show you full websites as advertised, but some things you can't see. Even looking at this blog on the phone has its problems. Any problems though with the browser will hopefully be eradicated with a software update. That's one of the great things about the iPhone. So many people have talked about what the iPhone can't do. But most of those problems can be fixed through a future software update. The only major things the iPhone won't be able to fix through a software update is upgrading to 3G and adding GPS.
In closing, I'm happy so far with the iPhone even though mine hasn't been activated yet. Yes it was expensive. Do I feel it will be worth it? Yes, I'm hoping so. I have told everyone that I know that I only buy cell phones every few years occasionally when my contract is up. When I get a phone, I want it to be something that I will enjoy carrying around and using. I don't want a paperweight for my pocket. This does seem a little too nice right now. I feel like I need to put buttons or velcro on all of my pockets to ensure it doesn't fall out. That's never happened to me before though. Knock on wood. I would say to not judge the iPhone until you experience it for yourself. So many people are dogging it and they haven't had a chance to actually see how wonderful it looks and reacts to your touch. Could my opinion change after a few months? Certainly, but the ball is now in Apple's court to ensure that they provide updates to make sure the iPhone runs to it's full potential.
Now, I need to go apply more aloe vera to my sunburn. I look like a raccoon right now. Ouch!

This made me happy.
I think it's a mix of Natalie Portman, Dustin Hoffman, Jason Bateman, and a movie mix of Toys and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Plus the use of the "Breakfast Theme" from Pee-Wee's Big Adventure.

This is why I love The Colbert Report...
here's another random video...
Wow. Thats fast!
Live Free or Die Hard was great!
I saw Live Free or Die Hard Monday night. I went into the film with so so expectations. I wasn't expecting much. The sequels this summer have been so lackluster that I didn't give this much hope. Boy, was I pleasantly surprised! In my honest opinion, I thought Live Free or Die Hard was just as entertaining and good as the previous entries in the series. Of course nothing will replace the original, but this one was good. To me, even though its PG-13, it's still just as violent and action packed as the R movies. I didn't give the lack of blood and language a second thought
Bruce has some great one liners and is still fun to watch as John McClane. Justin Long was entertaining as the hacker sidekick and even though Kevin Smith sounds dumb in the trailer, he's actually entertaining in his scenes as Warlock the hacker. Timothy Olyphant and Maggie Q make great bad guys, and whoever the bad guy is that jumps around like a real life spider-man was amazing! Every action piece in the movie is just amazing to watch. They didn't pull any punches when it comes to the action. If anyone complains about Die Hard, then I can guarantee it won't be because of the action scenes.
I think that out of all of this summers sequels, I would go see Die Hard again before any of the rest of them. It's a straight up great summer movie that makes a good addition to the Die Hard collection of films.

I know there's quite a few of these, but these are crazy!
Japanese TV never ceases to amaze me.
The hot costume
Kids and the giant flute
I think this is a DragonBall Z scene or something like that.
A slow motion food fight
A noodle game
Reflection in a pond
The room where everything falls down
The self tying shoes
Cloverfield
So apparantly, J.J. Abrams is working on a secret project called Cloverfield. If the following description is correct, this could be really, really cool. Because it's J.J. Abrams, I hope it will be amazing! It seems like everything he touches right now, turns to gold.
This is from aintitcool.com...
"So what is CLOVERFIELD? Well, word from inside the company is that CLOVERFIELD is a giant monster movie, featuring something that's being referred to internally as "The Parasite," and we’re going to see a trailer for it very soon that’s been designed and shot even as we speak. I’m not sure if it’s going to be attached to TRANSFORMERS or if we’ll see it later in the summer, but it’s definitely coming soon. And the end of it should feature one of those iconic images that makes people talk about a trailer for months.
And what makes this different than any other giant monster movie? Well, as I understand it, most of the film is going to be shot using home video cameras, as if from the point of view of real people who are experiencing an attack on New York. It’s designed as a fairly small picture, all things considered, and right now, they’re working to make sure the script is going to deliver some wild thrills (like an earthquake that levels Manhattan or an oil tanker flipping over by the Statue of Liberty), but that it’s not suddenly going to turn into a giant $150 million movie. It’s a tricky balance, and if they pull off everything they’re trying to do, CLOVERFIELD could be something really groovy. Not a man in suit in sight."
I hope they attach a trailer for this on Transformers just to give us a feel of what they're going for. If this movie is cool, then I don't mind waiting a tad longer for J.J.'s new Star Trek project.
Flugtag! Nashville Red Bull Flugtag 2007
Sunday, June 24, 2007
Josh, Jesse, and I headed over to the Redbull Flugtag at Riverfront Park on Saturday. I had been hearing about the event, but only in flash banner ads online and a few tv ads. I don't know how they did it, but over 80,000 people ended up going to the Flugtag. According to Red Bull, Nashville had the largest attendance of any U.S. Flugtag ever. That's really amazing considering how sweltering hot it was and how bad traffic was. One of the Flugtag teams set a North American Flugtag record with a flight of 155 feet with their "Rocky Top Rocket". Thats really an amazing feat considering all of the different "flying machines"(Red Bull term) that tried to jump. I think if we would have known how big the event was going to be, we would have planned a lot better. It was all we could do to find a good spot to stand and try to be comfortable at the same time. We didn't bother going over to the Riverfront Park side of the event. The crowd was as bad as the normal Fourth of July crowd. We ended up finding a spot close to a fence in front of LP Field. The entire event though was still a fun experience. Seeing 80,000 people come together just to watch a bunch of crazy people jump rickety "flying machines" off a ramp was great. It looks as though they don't do many Flugtags each year, but I hope that they decide to come back. Maybe, I'll form a team and jump. HA!
Here are two official event videos. I really liked the Eagle One: Colbert Flyer. I'm glad they put their flight online.

AFI's 100 Years...100 Movies 10th Anniversary List
AFI released their
100 Years...100 Movies 10th Anniversary list.
(if you don't want to register for the nifty clickable pdf, then I posted the list below for you.) Everyone that knows me understands how much I love movies. It's kind of disheartening that I have only seen 36 of these movies. I know that may come as a shock to those that know me. I really need to start Netflix'ing the other 64 movies. What makes this even worse? I own 4 of the movies I haven't seen. I've just never bothered watching them. I got them on sale at Best Buy and put them on the self when I got home.
Here's the 2007 list. The same list was compiled in 2007, but now they have made adjustments after a decade of new movies. What I thought was interesting about this process was the fact that only 4 movies were from the last decade. They're we're 23 new additions in all to the list. I guess 10 years makes a difference in how people feel about even older movies.

4 things to check out today
Here's a few things that have crossed my news desk today....
1. Have you heard about this new weight loss drug called "alli"? I saw the setup at Wal-Mart for it. Apparently it's supposed to be the next big thing in weight loss or something. It does have one side effect though...
and this guy
wrote a very funny blog entry about it.
2. Want to learn about power napping?
This site
shows you how to fall asleep anywhere. One of the ways this works is by listening to an mp3 with white noise on it. They have different length mp3s that gradually play the white noise and then as the time winds down, it plays noises to wake you up. As I have said before, I have trouble falling asleep. I am going to try and see if this works. I will definitely follow up on this story.
3. They're making an Office video game.
Maybe we'll get to play
Flaunkerton, How many M&Ms can you fit in your mouth?, Dunderball, Will Creed notice the potato instead of an apple?, How long will Kelly talk?, or Pam Pong. I wonder if you win Schrute Bucks? If you don't understand any of these references, you need to watch more Office.
4. It was not a good idea for me to see this...(someone might get ponged if they're not careful from now on. muah ha ha ha!)

Rockabye Baby CD's
Wednesday, June 13, 2007
I know, I know. Two blog posts in one day let alone one hour is a bit much, but I couldn't resist.
Tonight at work, a girl I work with had a cd club catalog. I was looking through it when I noticed a cd series called "Rockabye Baby!" in the rock section. They're lullabys for kids set to the songs of all sorts of artists. The catalog only had one for Nirvana, Led Zeppelin, U2, and Nine Inch Nails. It was the Nine Inch Nails and Nirvana ones that got my attention. So when I got home, I did some investigating like I sometimes do and found
this site.
I can't believe all the artists they have. Of course after listening to some of them, I realize that this is all just a way to make parents happy. Why listen to "Row, Row, Row Your Boat", when you can listen to The Beatles or Pink Floyd? I simply can't get over how many different artists they have. I was expecting a few cd's, but not as many as they actually have! Take a listen to some of them on their site or go to iTunes. It's really interesting.
Mr. Wizard is gone...
I lost another part of my childhood today. I got home and read the unfortunate news that Mr. Wizard(Don Herbert) had died. Mr. Wizard is one my earliest childhood and favorite tv memories. He is one of three tv personalities that I loved watching early as a child that have now died. (The other two? Mr. Rogers and Jim Henson.)
I remember my mom waking me up early in the morning, getting ready for preschool(and later elementary school), eating breakfast, and watching Mr. Wizard on Nickelodeon. This was back in the day when Nickelodeon was just starting out on cable. Back in the day when they had "You Can't Do That on Television", "Today's Special","Double Dare", "Danger Mouse, "Banana Man","Super Ted", "Inspector Gadget", etc... I could go on and on.
Anyways, the mornings on Nickelodeon for me always consisted of the 50's/60's versions of "Lassie", "Dennis the Menace", and then "Mr. Wizard's World". I used to love to watch the experiments and lessons that Mr. Wizard and his assistant would pull off. Whether it was an experiment dealing with some chemical, or if it was just him teaching me about how computers worked, I loved it. Even in retrospect, the experiments are still cool. I would always wish that one day I could meet him and get him to show me a science experiment.
He always got me excited to go to school and learn about science. All throughout elementary school, science was my favorite subject. I always participated in the Science Fairs and I even went to the summer science camps at school called, "Camp Discovery". I credit Mr. Wizard for all of it. If it wasn't for him, I probably wouldn't like computers the way I do. If it wasn't for him, I probably wouldn't appreciate science and the new discoveries that are found every day. I will always be grateful to Mr. Wizard for being a wonderful part of my childhood. I will always be grateful for everything that he taught me even though I never got a chance to meet him.

This just makes you feel good. The judges are expecting another person to make an ass out of them self on tv, but then he starts to sing. This is from the British version of America's Got Talent called, (you guessed it!) Britain's Got Talent. I'm not a big fan of the whole Aerosmith part at the end...
A special video titled "Bob"
Wednesday, June 06, 2007
My friend/roommate Jody sent me this video. It's of a "Weird" Al Yankovic song called "Bob". There is something special about this song. I won't tell you what it is. See if you can figure it out without going to the YouTube link. That would be cheating. I would have to kill you. muah ha ha....
My thoughts on Evan Almighty are also more than meet the eye!
I saw Evan Almighty on Monday night . It was ummmm o...k. It wasn't a bad movie, but it was A LOT more family friendly than what I was expecting. Honestly, I think if the movie didn't have one kid make a "Did you know a (something) has a penis as long as his body?" joke, the movie would have been rated G. Even Steve Carell was just ok. He had a few funny moments, but nothing memorable at all. He's better in one episode of The Office than in this whole movie.
I know the movie is about God putting faith in somebody, but even Bruce Almighty had some adult type humor to it. This had none at all.
Here's the bottom line... Save your money. Watch the two minute trailer and you will have seen the entire movie. Seriously, just watch the trailer and you can say you saw the movie.
On the other hand,
I have been very coy as to my opinions about Transformers. As I described in another post, they have promoting the hell out of this movie. With all the MTV Awards stuff and even this:
I watched Transformers just like most kids my age when I was younger. I had the toys and everything else. I have seen a lot of the stuff around on the web about the movie, including pics of the Tranformers and all that stuff. I didn't get involved in the flames on Optimus Prime debate or anything like that. I have just been neutral. That was until I saw this...
When I saw that on tv the other night, I almost flipped out in excitement. All they needed to do was make that the trailer and people would come see it. If the whole movie has sequences like this, it is going to be awesome! But then again, we all thought Spidey 3, Pirates 3, and Shrek 3 would be great. They turned out to be just ok. Man, I wish this would have been an IMAX movie! I would hate life at work for a couple of weeks, but it would have been awesome to see.
Blog Update
I'm trying out this new template. It's more simple looking than the last couple of templates. I'm probably going to give the ole blog a new name too. 10 Biscuits! is kind of old and besides, it was a Brandon joke to begin with. I just thought it would be a funny name for a blog. In time, a new name will reveal itself.
I hate Akon so much...
Monday, June 04, 2007
If you know me, you know I hate freaking Akon. That man has absolutely no singing ability and yet people play that stupid song of his on the radio and people love it. He is a punk. First at one concert he did something he wasnt supposed to on stage to a 14 yr old and now this....
Sorry, you'll have to turn your head sideways to see it. I hope that guy sues the heck out of Akon, the venue, and the venue security for letting that happen to him.
Ken Swizzle's Time Machine

This video might be taken down by the time you read this. If you're lucky enough to watch it though, talk about awkward! I watched this on tv live and I don't think I have ever felt this awkward in a long time. Sarah Silverman is so great to make jokes about Paris Hilton to her face! I felt like I was watching two people fixing to get into a fight or something, but I was laughing hard. If you did watch the awards, I think Sarah's Lindsey Lohan joke wasn't a joke at all. There was just something about the way she told it. It didn't have a punch line to it.
If you watched the movie awards, was it just me or did it seem like a 2 hour Transformers commercial? The preshow had all the cars on the red carpet. When the nominees were announced during the awards, it made a transforming type sound and the picture transformed. The award for "Best Summer Movie You Haven't Seen Yet" went to...you guessed it, Transformers. After Shia Lebouf, Tyrese, Josh Duhamel, and Michael Bay accepted the award, they went to a commercial break. After the commercial break, the presenters for the nest award were Shia Lebouf, Tyrese, and Josh Duhamel. Later on during a spoof Sarah Silverman was doing, she interacted in a scene from Transformers. I'm not going to even mention the ads for Transformers that ran during the commercials. MTV continues to get worse and worse every day. I used to love MTV, but now its so bad and painful to watch. I haven't seen a movie plugged as much on an awards show since Titanic legitimately won 11 Oscars.
