The Belcourt is doing another film series that I really want to go to. I am an avid film lover as anyone that knows me knows. Would you believe that I have only seen 1 and a half of all of the movies below?! These are all going to be 35 mm prints. I think this is a perfect opportunity for me to enjoy these classics as they we're intended for the first time. If anyone wants to go with me, please let me know. This is like the Friday night movies if they went right. At least these movies won't have a bunch of people talking all the way through. At least I hope not.

I will let everyone speculate on which 1 and half movies I have seen...

THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD – Oct 6-7 Ages 4 and up. The first film of the series is a fun-filled, fast-paced technicolor treat is cited as a great place to start. Directed by Michael Curtiz (Casablanca) with Errol Flynn as the charismatic Robin Hood, this 1938 technicolor treat lives up to it's original tagline: "Only the rainbow can duplicate its brilliance!"

TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD – Oct 13-14 Ages 9 and up - Warning: serious "tear-jerker" The story of lawyer Atticus Finch's (Gregory Peck) defense of a black man on trial for rape is certain to evoke important (if not delayed) conversations with regards to such realities as death, crime and injustice, if not at least a few tears. Parents with a weak tolerance for frankness should especially take caution.

THE LADY EVE – Oct 20-21 Ages 8 and up - It's high-seas screwball comedy when a clueless heir (Henry Fonda) falls prey...twice...to a couple of gambling con-artists posing as a father and beautiful daughter. But will she fall prey to him? This should play especially well to girls, particularly the ones with a little sass.

MONKEY BUSINESS – Nov 3-4 Ages 5 and up - Directed by Howard Hawks and starring Cary Grant and Marilyn Monroe, this side-splitting comedy is about two scientists, a youth potion, and the madness that ensure.

METROPOLIS – Nov 17-18 Ages 8 & up, but with a tolerance for suspense and a bit of creepiness. - A silent film from Fritz Lang? And a 2 hour one at that? Well, yes. This tale of class struggle set amidst a towering city where workers toil beneath the earth while the establishment bathes in the sunlight is as sure to draw awe from the set design as it is to make one aware of the possibilities of the silent genre. Parents, be prepared to read aloud the intertitles and do a bit of explaining. This version of METROPOLIS is recently restored and includes its original score.

WEST SIDE STORY – Nov 24-25 Ages 7 and up, but with a tolerance for knife fights! - Yes, the themes (and some of the lyrics) in here are indeed quite grown-up and, true to form, everyone winds up dead, but kids might know the star-crossed lovers from Romeo and Juliet, adapted to two gangs in control of a New York neighborhood. At any rate, the widescreen photography almost leaps off the screen as do the musical numbers and the age-old theme of young love in peril. For the adventurous...

DUCK SOUP – Dec 1-2 Ages 5 and up - It'll be hard to resist those crazy Marx Brothers, especially the buffoonish Harpo. In this one, the Groucho character is elected president and it's downhill from there. If they like this one, try Night at the Opera.

MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS – Dec 8-9 Ages 3 and up - Starring Judy Garland and Margaret O'Brien, Meet Me, about a turn-of-the-century family deeply rooted in turn-of-the-century St. Louis faced with a possible move to New York. Quite simple in plot and execution, the film is one of the most delightful and endearing musicals ever made.

THE RED BALLOON and WHITE MANE Fri - Thur, Dec. 14-20 New 35mm print! All ages. Two wordless short films at about 35 minutes each from French director Albert Lamorisse. The Red Balloon is an allegory on the power of love and friendship told through a boy and the red balloon that follows him around Paris. White Mane, equally beloved by children in France but seeing it's US release here for the first time ever, is about a boy and an escaped wild horse in the marsh region of Camargue on the French Mediterranean.

IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE – Fri-Tue, Dec. 21-25 6 and up - This Christmas tale of town banker George Bailey and the angel who shows him what life would be without him is a yearly tradition at the Belcourt and serves as a proper closing film for the series. Hot Dog!
